Hookah Lau Bubble Bar

This painting was originally created to celebrate the spirit of Hukilau 2007 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. It was a grand tiki event that took place at the famous Yankee Clipper Hotel. Inside the hotel is the Wreck Bar, a great, classic bar with a nautical theme. This bar features a series of underwater windows that look into the hotel's swimming pool. At certain scheduled times; beautiful "mermaids" swim about and interact with guests in the bar. It was this, memories of the underwater pool bars of the past and the Weeki Wachee mermaid show in Florida that all led to this image.

In the painting, we can feel the exotic buzz as several tikis throw back a few tasty tropical cocktails in some very unusual mugs! If people drink out of mugs looking like tikis, then tikis have got to have mugs looking like people, of course! Now, these mugs are not just anybody. They are caricatures of some of the more celebrated artisans of the tiki culture. If you know the guys, you will be able to recognize "Crazy Al," "Bamboo Ben," "Squid," and last but not least, our good friend and part of our island ohana, "Gecko." Their "mugs" are now mugs in this piece... eternalized in the glory of exotica.

Behind the tikis, we can see the featured show. Beautiful underwater dancers dressed as mermaids create the perfect atmosphere of aquatic sensuality. Like the mermaids at the Weeki Wachee show, they take an occasional breath of air from the tubes that bubble and sway in the current. In this case though, the air source is a giant tiki shaped hookah, not unlike the one the Caterpillar in Alice in Wonderland had. This inspires the title of the painting and a parody on the event it was fondly created for.
